REQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSAbout Microsoft Proofing Tools
Answers to common questions about Microsoft Proofing Tools for Office 97 for Windows 95 and Windows NT.
Q. Do the Proofing Tools translate text?
A.
No. The Proofing Tools allow you to check spelling, hyphenate words at correct syllable breaks, and, for some languages, find synonyms and check grammar. They do not perform translations.Q. Will the Proofing Tools help me put in the correct diacritical marks (accents and such)?
A.
The Proofing Tools recognize accented letters (such as á and ñ) as different from their unaccented counterparts. For example, if you have the Spanish Proofing Tools and you spell-check the word "Espanol," the Spelling command will report this as an unrecognized word and suggest the correct spelling ("Español").
We don't recommend, however, that you rely on the spell-checker to add accents to words, as the spell-checker will flag a word as incorrectly spelled only if it
always requires an accent. The French spell-checker, for example, does not flag j'ai danse as incorrect (even though it should be j'ai dansé ), because danse without the accent is a valid, though different, word. The manual that comes with the Proofing Tools includes directions for inserting the accented letters and other special characters used in various non-English languages.
Q. Where do the word lists come from?
A.
The spelling dictionaries, thesauri, hyphenation files, and grammar checkers in Microsoft Proofing Tools are the same files included in foreign versions of Microsoft Office. If you purchase the Italian Proofing Tools, for example, you get the same thesaurus, spell-checker, and hyphenation file that you would get if you went to Italy and bought an Italian edition of Office.
Q. I already own Proofing Tools for Word 7 for Windows. Can I use these same files with Office 97?
A.
Owners of certain Word 7 Proofing Tools kits can install them for use with Word 97 for Windows. However, these kits cannot be used to check spellings in the other Office applications, and of course do not contain the updated files offered in the Office 97 kits. See Upgrade Information for Microsoft Proofing Tools.Q. Can I use the Office Proofing Tools with Microsoft Works?
A.
You must have one or more Office applications (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Outlook, or PowerPoint) in order to install the Microsoft Office Proofing Tools.Proofing Tools designed specifically for Microsoft Works are available in some languages.
