Using Office 97 Proofing Tools with Different Language Groups

Each of the six language groups in the table below uses a unique character set for displaying text. Software designed to display text in one of these groups may not handle characters from the other sets well.

If you plan to use Proofing Tools packages from different language groups on the same computer, it is recommended that you use Windows NT 4 as your operating system rather than Windows 95. Windows NT 4 is better equipped for switching between language groups, but it is still subject to display problems when using text from different language groups at the same time in applications such as Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access.

If you are using Pan European Windows 95, we recommend that you dedicate the computer to one language group and not switch between language groups. Pan European Windows 95 supports all of the language groups, but to switch from one language group to another you must reinstall the operating system each time.

Instead of using Pan European Windows 95 for your dedicated computer, you may choose to use a localized version (Polish, Russian, Greek, etc.) of Windows 95 or Windows NT 4. A localized version of the operating system has the advantage of eliminating any of the minor display problems associated with using a language group that is "foreign" to your operating system.

1-Western European Group

2-Central European Group

3-Cyrillic (Russian only)

4-Baltic Group

5-Greek

6-Turkish
